Actos Bladder Cancer Warning Added to Canadian Drug Label

Emma Gonzalez | April 30th, 2012

In Canada, health officials have issued a consumer warning regarding Actos bladder cancer. Lawsuits have sought damages because of bladder cancer, while also citing other serious side effects like Actos heart failure. Health Canada issued the new warning on April 19, 2012, after a 2011 safety review revealed that high dosages and/or long-term Actos use increase a patient’s risk of bladder cancer.

Canada Health warns consumers of Actos cancer

On June 17, 2011, after France and Germany issued an Actos recall, and the United States issued new warnings about the drug, Health Canada announced that it would conduct a safety review of the diabetes medication. At the time, Canadian health officials stated that they would evaluate potential risks associated with Actos and take appropriate action, if necessary. Ten months later, the verdict is out: additional action was warranted.

Actos heart failure and bladder cancer among life-threatening side effects

Canada will add an increased risk of Actos cancer to its warning label. Additionally, Health Canada has recommended that patients with bladder cancer, or patients who have a personal or family history of bladder cancer or blood in their urine, not be prescribed Actos.

Patients currently taking Actos, and who have concerns regarding the diabetes drug, are recommended to speak with their prescribing physicians. Actos heart failure is also an alleged risk factor.

Actos lawsuits in MDL and class action

Actos lawsuits often allege life-threatening Actos side effects like bladder cancer and Actos heart failure. Many plaintiff complaints state that Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the drug’s manufacturer, failed to warn the medical community and consumers of the drug’s serious risks.

In the United States, many federal Actos lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. In Canada, a class action Actos lawsuit was filed in December 2011, to fight for all patients diagnosed with Actos cancer.
