Louisiana Plaintiffs Claim Causal Link Between Actos and Bladder Cancer
Amidst allegations of severe Actos side effects including bladder cancer resulting in severe pain and suffering, a group of plaintiffs have issued a bundled complaint in the United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana. They seek relief for physical injury, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.
In the complaint, filed by an Actos lawyer on June 12, 2012, the plaintiffs allege that drug maker Takeda Pharmaceuticals knew of the causal link between Actos and bladder cancer, yet failed to disclose this information to consumers, doctors and medical providers. Similar cases filed around the country are now being combined and heard under one judge in multi-district litigation (MDL) in the Western District of Louisiana.
Actos bladder cancer
Actos is prescribed to treat type II diabetes. Allegations of a causal link between the drug and bladder cancer are on the rise. According to the complaint, Takeda knew of the risks associated with Actos, yet allegedly concealed this information in an effort to keep the drug on the market.
Actos is one of the defendant’s top-selling drugs. Last year alone, Actos sales brought in more than $4.8 billion in sales.
According to the complaint, Takeda knew of the risks associated with the drug as far back as 2005, when the first study linking Actos to bladder cancer was released. Another study released in 2007 again linked the drug to the bladder cancer. In 2011, the American Diabetes Association reviewed the information on record and concluded that there was a causal link between Actos and bladder cancer.
The plaintiffs in this case claim that they have endured injuries associated with bladder cancer that will require lifelong medical treatment and monitoring. They also allege to have suffered “mental anguish and psychological trauma” as a result of living with the knowledge that they have experienced such dangerous and unexpected side effects.
Actos side effects
Although Actos has been primarily linked to bladder cancer, there are other Actos side effects that may cause severe damage. For example, Actos has also been linked to heart failure. People who have ingested the drug who may be experiencing symptoms associated with Actors heart failure or other side effects are advised to seek emergency medical attention.
